Some debts cannot be repaid. They can only be honored — through remembrance, through action, and through making sure no sacrifice is ever forgotten.
I'm Ben Linkous — a retired Army Master Sergeant from Pulaski, Virginia. I served alongside people who embodied courage and dedication in ways that deserve lasting respect.
I try to speak about my service honestly. I didn't do anything particularly valorous. I fulfilled my responsibilities alongside others who did the same. But some of those people did not come home. And their sacrifice has never left me.
Mission: Honor exists because the deeper responsibility begins after the uniform is set aside. It means remembering those who gave everything, honoring the lives they lived, and actively supporting the Gold Star families they left behind.
This is not about ceremonies or statistics. It is about names, stories, and families who carry a weight most of us will never fully understand.
The men and women who gave their lives in service deserve to be remembered by name — not as abstractions, but as real people with real stories, families, and dreams. We commit to keeping those names alive.
Gold Star families carry a burden that most Americans never see. Their strength is extraordinary and their sacrifice is often invisible. We commit to recognizing, supporting, and standing beside them — not just once, but always.
The best way to honor those who served is to serve ourselves — in our communities, our neighborhoods, and our daily lives. We commit to making that service real and ongoing, not ceremonial.
A Gold Star family has lost a loved one in military service. They carry that loss every day — through holidays, milestones, and ordinary moments that suddenly feel anything but ordinary.
Their strength is extraordinary. Their sacrifice is often invisible to the broader public. And their need for community, support, and recognition is real and ongoing — not just on Memorial Day.
Mission: Honor is committed to making sure Gold Star families in the New River Valley and beyond know they are not alone — that their community sees them, values them, and stands with them.
If you are a Gold Star family member, or know one who could use support or connection, please reach out. This community exists for you.
I served in the United States Army and retired as a Master Sergeant. I am proud of that service. I also try to speak about it honestly — I didn't do anything particularly valorous. I did my job alongside people who did the same.
But some of those people gave everything. And that fact has never left me.
Mission: Honor is my commitment to making sure their sacrifice means something beyond a flag and a ceremony. It means community. It means support. It means showing up for the families they left behind — in ways large and small, for as long as it takes.
If you share that commitment, reach out. There is always more work to do.
